Whether you're a collector, or simply an appreciator of decoys, this is a rare, fantastic example of an antique wooden Surf Scoter drake from the early 1990s. This decoy has been hand-painted likely a few times over the years, with numerous instances of surface wear and wounds from his working days. We love his worn in nature which tells the story of his days on the water and that bent beak - incredibly interesting to look at.
We dug up the auction information on this bird, which describes him as hailing from Maine with "solid body, flaking filler and 'two or three knots'. His neck has two vertical checks." OK.
His story doesn't stop there: this bird was featured in a Ducks Unlimited poster print by Ira Garber (see photos!). Even the most decoy experts recognized how special he is. For us, well, we just enjoy watching him live out his retirement on the shelf - a dandie with a story to tell.
