Antique American Brilliant Period Hobstar Ring Neck Decanter
A Very Brilliant Decanter
A Very Brilliant Decanter
There's a few ways to identify cut lead glass, like this incredibly lovely decanter. First, simply tap it with your finger. Does it ring like a bell? Next, observe the clarity and brilliance. Can you see through it? Does it glitter in the sun? Finally, hold it in your hands. The heft alone is a tell-tale.
This decanter was produced during the American Brilliance Period which ended in the early 1920s when American companies started to compete with the high-value, intricately designed pieces popular in Europe. As such, many of these items are unsigned (like this one), in an attempt to pass them off as European wares. The end result was more intricate, more sparkly designs. This piece has no shortage of either.
This particular pattern is in line with J. Hoare & Co hobstar works, with the fine cross-hatching showing up in many of his pieces. However, we've been unable to positively identify the maker of this. What we do know is that, and at the end of the day, you can toast to the rich history, fine craftsmanship and brilliant detailing that will live on forever on your bar cart.
